Lawrence Block

On plotting his books:
"It's a curious process, which
I don't begin to understand and how much I know about the book, depends
on the book."
from the Mysterious Pen interview
Lawrence Block published his first novel in 1961. Since
then he has written over 40 novels, hundreds of short stories, several books
on how to write mysteries, and created four on-going series. He has won
several Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America and in 1993 was
named a Grand Master.
On Matthew Scudder
"If Scudder ever had a code,
he's long since lost the code book. One of the things that makes the books
interesting for me is that he doesn't have a programmed response for situations.
He has to figure out what to do in each situation, what he can live with,
what strikes him as the way to deal with things. So I think a man without
a code, in that respect, makes a more interesting character."
from the Mysterious Pen interview
In "Lawrence Block: the Mysterious Pen ",
Block discusses his early days as a writer, explains where characters like
Bernie Rhodenbarr, Matt Scudder, and Evan Tanner come from, and shares some
thoughts about the mystery field.
